The French research consortium for Asian studies, Groupement d’Intérêt scientifique Etudes asiatiques, or “GIS Asie,” was created in 2013.

It serves the community of institutions and researchers whose work involves Asia. Its mission is to promote the best possible awareness of the studies on Asia being done in France and to strengthen French research activities concerning this geographical area, which is becoming every day more important on the world scene.

This consortium, which is still growing, currently includes the following 21 institutions and their research units on Asia: the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), the Collège de France, the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Paris‐Belleville (ENSAPB), the École normale supérieure (ENS), the Ecole normale supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon), the Ecole pratique des hautes études (EPHE), the École supérieure des sciences économiques et commerciales (ESSEC), the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH), the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco), the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (IEP), the Institut d’études politiques de Lyon (IEP Lyon), the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD), the Université d'Aix-Marseille (AMU), the Université d'Angers, the Université Jean Moulin - Lyon 3, the Université Panthéon-Sorbonne – Paris 1, the Université Paris-Diderot – Paris 7, the Université de Paris Ouest - Nanterre La Défense – Paris 10, and the Université Paris-Sorbonne.

GIS Asie is operated by a working unit of the CNRS, also coordinating the Réseau Asie & Pacifique (or Asia and the Pacific Network): this network includes and connects 2,000 francophone scholars, doctoral candidates and experts on Asia and the Pacific.
